Chapter 5: Five Families Connections

In the 2004 status report The Changing Face of Organized Crime in New Jersey, issued by the State of New Jersey’s Commission of Investigation, there are references to the “Seven Families” of the New York–New Jersey–Philadelphia region. Including the DeCavalcante family, as well as the Bruno family (aka Bruno–Scarfo family, aka the Philadelphia crime family), the authors of the report were certainly exercising some creative license in naming these smaller outfits as if they shared equal standing among the Five Families, though they were not without reason for doing so.

The DeCavalcante family never managed to win a seat on LCN’s Commission, the governing body that comprised members of the Gambino, Lucchese, Colombo, Bonanno, and Genovese families. However, their inclusion in the State of New Jersey’s report as the “Sixth Family” recognizes not just their long history but also their continued presence in the region and their sustained contributions toward shaping the face of modern organized crime in the Garden State.

Sam the Plumber had always hoped that the Commission would fully accept the family he spent so much effort modernizing into their fold, and they did for the most part. But, by constantly withholding full membership, the Five Families always managed to keep the family of New Jersey “farmers” at arm’s length. While these measures were likely taken not to encroach on the DeCavalcante’s autonomy but rather in the interest of continued collaboration with the smaller Jersey-born-and-bred family, they did end up, at many times, both compromising the independence of the group as well as cultivating feelings of slight inadequacy within the ranks.
